Today was my first day of work! Quite exciting, even if I am working for my own mother. (Hey, a job’s a job. Who am I to be picky?)
My mother knows how to motivate me. After she woke me up this morning (as opposed to this afternoon, which is when I normally wake up in the summer) she managed to lure me out of my nest with the sound of coffee beans being ground and the irresistable smell of hot, percolating joe. After slinging on some assortment of clothing, I came down to discover that she had already set up a little workstation on our dining room table. There was a work laptop with design programs, all sorts of necessary officey sundries… And a little file folder, full of neatly-typed and printed tasks for me.
Dang. She’s good.
After all, what better way to make me work than give my work a cute little packaging? Oh I am such a sucker. And oh does she ever know how to use that.
Now, I’m not exactly the most useful employee as of yet, being that my web design experience comes down to making this website with her. (Meaning, I sent in a request-for-proposal document, and she sent me back some mockups. I then proceeded to ask for more pink and a prettier font, and BAM, Off The Cuff was born.)
Clearly, I have mastered some key rules of design. (Pink and pretty will always improve it! Oh wait…) But my technology skills were pretty limited, so she sat me down with a bunch of Lynda.com tutorials and said “Learn!” So I learned.
And let me tell you–I am now the best photo re-sizer around. If you need a photo resized, you come to ME. I am the master now. Oh yes.
This is so much less glamourous than un-glamourous volunteer work…
